Webinars – tips for lecturers/speakers
Checklist for participation in PALEMA webinars
To get the most out of your participation in our webinars and reduce the risk of technical problems, please follow this:
Test in advance
Run the test below well in advance of the webinar to fix any issues.
And remember to test in the environment you will be in when the webinar is held, i.e. on the same computer, with the same browser and with the same network!
Connectivity test
Do a connectivity test beforehand to make sure that your equipment (webcam, microphone, speakers) works. You can also test your network (connectivity test)!
Important – If the connectivity test (what you see under the heading “Connectivity” below) does not result in a result as shown below within about a minute, you cannot communicate with the system and then there is a great risk that you have a firewall that blocks you. Read more about firewalls below!
Tip. If you are browsing via WiFi, it can help to move closer to the router if you have a bit of a bad connection, connecting the computer with a cable to the router is the very best and highly recommended if possible!
If something doesn’t work, make sure your browser accepts the different elements. It’s a bit different for different browsers where this is, but in Google Chrome you click on the padlock next to the URL.
Test webinar
If you have not previously participated in one of our webinars as a presenter/speaker, we strongly recommend that we run a test webinar well in advance of the real event, so we can check that everything is working properly and so we can show you exactly how to use the tool.
Please contact support@palema.org well in advance so we can plan this if you have not already received information on how to book such a test.
Web browser
Make sure you are using one of the recommended browsers:
and make sure you have the latest version of each browser.
Close other programs
To reduce the risk of disruption, close all other programs/browsers/apps on your computer and keep only the webinar open. This is particularly important for those who are sharing video/sound/screen with participants.
Anti-virus program
Sometimes these can mess things up. If you experience problems when testing, try turning off your anti-virus program and see if that helps.
The network
Make sure that no one else is using your network for large downloads or uploads while you are presenting a webinar. This also applies to streaming services such as Netflix or YouTube.
Firewalls
In some cases, a firewall may prevent participation in a webinar. If you are using a standard firewall at home, this is usually not a problem, but if you experience interference, try turning off the firewall.
If you are on a corporate network and it is not working, you can ask your IT department to look into the following:
We use dynamic IP addresses, please make sure to whitelist the below domains:
*.tokbox.com
*.opentok.com
*.demio.com
When it comes to the ports used by the Demio streaming service, our recommendations are as follows:
Minimum: we require TCP port 443/8443 to be open. Some firewall/proxy rules only allow for SSL traffic over port 443. You will need to make sure that non-web traffic can also pass over this port.
Better: In addition to the minimum being met, we also recommend that UDP port 3478 is open.
Best: For the best possible experience, we recommend that UDP ports 1025 – 65535 be open.
Caching problem
In some situations, especially if you turn your webcam off and on repeatedly, caching problems can occur, which you can reduce by
- Closing all other browsers / tabs
- Make sure you have the latest version of the browser
- Empty the browser of cache and cookies. Info on how in Chrome
- Use incognito mode in the browser.

Participate via mobile
Participating as a presenter/speaker in a webinar via mobile phone or tablet is not possible today.
When it is time for the webinar
You will receive several emails about the webinar you are registered for as a presenter. On the one hand, there will be a registration confirmation immediately after you have registered, then there will be one or more reminders before the webinar.
In all of these, there is a link “Join” to the webinar. Please note that this is a personal link for you, so you cannot share it with anyone else.
Just make sure you open the link with one of the recommended browsers. If you have a different browser by default, it will open with this one if you just click on the link in the email, then you will have to copy and paste the link into one of the recommended readers instead.
There is also a link “Add to calendar” which is good to use, then you can use your calendar’s reminder function as well, and you will also find the link to the webinar in your calendar then.
Any problems?
If you encounter problems you cannot solve, you can contact PALEMA support at support@palema.org if it is before the webinar, i.e. if you test in advance and something fails.
If it is just before or during a webinar, try in the first place to reload the page, or exit the webinar and enter again with the link you received via email. This usually solves most problems!
If not – try to contact the tool’s own support (write in English) at e-mail support@demio.com. They have 24/7 support and usually respond quickly!
